Parental Involvement - Outsiders
I am curious how many of our parents, grandparents, or older brothers or sisters have had experiences with The Outsiders. This is where you can help your child earn some extra credit on the test we took today. I want to know what you think of the book - maybe you read it when you were in 7th grade, maybe you saw your child feverishly reading it and couldn't believe your eyes, maybe you watched the movie with your child and were amazed at how young Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe were. Please comment and make sure you let me know who your child is so they can get credit. :)

I have never been fortunate enough to read the book or see the movie. Matthew seemed to really enjoy both, though. He always read a chapter ahead and has been talking about it a lot lately. Thanks for the great experience. Michelle Leininger (Matthew Leininger - 5/6 hour)
Both my husband and I read the book about a million years ago, but remembered much of it as Tom shared his views on the the story. Tom's dad saw the movie, but I have not at this time. We discussed with Tom the differences between novels and movies as well as what can get lost in the transfer from books to the movies. We enjoyed sharing our memories of the book with him. Thanks! ( Tom R. 3/4)
I have not read the book myself, but have heard a lot about the storyline. My daughter, Remy, has filled me in chapter by chapter. She enjoyed reading The Outsiders as well as viewing the first half of the movie. Sounds like a great compliment to your curriculum. Thanks,

I saw the movie, way back when it first came out. Zach enjoyed the book and movie. He asked me if I knew Tom Cruise was in the movie. I didn't remember that. Maybe I'll have to read the book. Laura Remming (Zach Remming)
I was not much of a reader - but I do remember reading Outsiders. It was my favorite book.
Also, I watch the movie back when it was made and again this past summer with Schaeffer.
I didn't remember that Tom Cruise was in it. (I guess he was big back then!)
I was fun that your class got to experience it all too!
Carol Gregerson (Schaeffer -5/6 hour)
I do remember reading the book. At the time, I remember thinking how realistic it was because we dealt with Soc's at school and instead of calling them "Greasers", we called them "Burnouts". I shared that with Tony and he thought it was hillarious. Isn't it amazing how a book can be so timeless? Having taught the book in English myself, it's amazing how it still relates to kids today and that the problems of the past are still the problems faced by teens today. Thanks!

I read the Outsiders when I was in 7th Grade a LOOONG time ago! I vaguely remembered it, so I read along with the class! I would read Madelyn's copy when she was in bed. (I did end up reading ahead towards the end of the book, and enjoyed seeing what her predictions were.) Madelyn enjoyed the movie and the book, however she was disappointed that the characters were not quite as she pictured (Dally was not blonde as in the book.) It was fun talking with her about something that I had experienced at her age.

I have not read The Outsiders yet. My daughter Christal has enjoyed reading the book and the movie so much. She has told me that I should read it some day too. It sounds like a really good book. Christal even wants to rent different versions of the movies.Christina Wade (Christal Wade 5th/6th hour)
I remember reading the Outsiders back in school many, many years ago and how much it was like real life where we went to school. In our school the kids were called "Greasers"! I don't think I have seen the movie, but Jennie told me that she thought the movie was great and did I know that Tom Cruise AND Patrick Swayze were both in it?? Maybe I should take a couple of hours and watch it!!!
Viki Brown (Jennie Brown 3/4)
I have not read the book or seen the movie. Stephanie enjoyed both very much! We will have to be sure to rent the movie this winter! Thanks for introducing her to it.

I remeber back in my days of middle school when our english teacher handed us our first true bood; it was called The Outsiders. No one knew how good it could be. We still find ourselves as seniors discussing this book in situations that involve the "greasers" and "socs" Andrew Keltner(Kaitlin Keltner)
We enjoyed how excited our son was to read the Outsiders, and the many times he initiated discussion about the book. I remember both of his older brothers enjoying this book in middle school as well. We have all seen the movie, and it was fun to compare/contrast. Thanks for the great learning experience and enthusiasm. Cindy Hartwig (Scott 3/4 hour)
I read the Outsiders and saw the movie. I thought the message of the book was important and appreicate the opportuntiy that Jason was given to read it. He seemed to enjoy the book and movie
as I did as well. Sue Renaud

When I was in middle school, I enjoyed reading the Outsiders as well. It was a big hit when we were reading it! Jessica seemed to really like the book, and the movie even more! Thanks!

Its been a while since I have read this book but I do remember reading it. It was a good book to read. I am glad that my daughter got the chance to read it also.
Elle Lorenz (Tony Lorenz 3/4)_
I have read The Outsiders and it was a really good book. Also I have seen the movie too. I liked the movie better than the book but they both were really good. And they were very similar to eachother unlike some books and movies. I hope you guys liked the book it was a really good one. Ms. Smith is the best!!!
Hannah Marler (Abby Marler 3/4 hour)
I have read The Outsiders every year for the past 16 years. It is one of my favorite books: to read, to teach, and to watch. I feel that the experiences that Ponyboy and his friends go through are just as true today as they were when Hinton wrote it.
Carla Koch (Lucy Koch)
This was the first time I had read "The Outsiders". I figured it was a good idea to know what Paul was reading. I enjoyed the book, and it made for good discussions with Paul about people being different, but the same. We also talked about the 3 deaths, and how they could have been avoided. Donna Rapisardo (Paul Rapisardo - 5/6 hour)
